Hawaii: quilts and tattoos

March 23, 2010

I finally made it to Hawaii!  I’ve wanted to go there (as have so many) for quite some time, and just made it home. One of the visual themes that I kept running into were Hawaiian quilts and tattoos. There’s a lot of history behind both, too. I took a few pics of patterns that I liked, and I might even try.  And, yes, before you ask, several are from the shower curtain!

I also managed to pick up a bit of lumber while I was there, too.  It was in a great little store called Woodshop Gallery & Cafe in Honomu Village near Akaka Falls.  Some mango and curly koa.  Now to figure out what to do with it.

Searching for inspirado

May 27, 2009

That’s what I’ve been doing.  Which in my world means that I’m waiting for a good idea to hit me. I took several pictures while in Chicago the last couple of weekends.  The question is whether any of these

almost-ideas will amount to anything.

These reminded me of the DC star. Maybe a series someday?

Last weekend we were in the suburbs.  We toured Frank Lloyd Wright‘s home and studio.  We also wandered around Oak Park looking at some of Wright’s prairie inspired architecture.  The art glass is my current hope for inspirado.  I even purchased a book about it.

My apologies to Frank LLoyd Wright. My photography doesn’t do justice to his work.

I’m sitting at work, waiting until the people on the stage floor (70 feet below me) need me.

It’s the first big show of the new year.  I should be excited just to get my hands back into the game.  So, in my down time, what do I think about?  Staining wood.  I’ve been mentally working out a problem with mounting some wall pieces that I’ve been working on, and suddenly had and idea.  I’m goin’ industrial.  Tek screws, maybe.  Then, another idea.  Using initials with simple patterns, both inside and on the background.  I’m looking around me for a piece of paper or pen or anything to write on, and nothing.  Another idea, and at this point I’m almost frantically trying to remember all of these ideas.  I can’t forget!  Who knows when I’ll be able to sketch something.  Of all the unlikely places to get inspired….
