Moving on, with lessons learned

July 25, 2010

I’ve blogged about my IATSE 618 logo project several times.  I am feeling the need to get the final project out of my head, so I can move on to something else. I tried several new techniques, most of which turned out rather well:  New stencil paper, arced tape lines, stencil numbers and letters.  I’ve learned a few unexpected lessons along the way as well:  Don’t over-burnish the tape, ’cause you’ll get dimples; the stencil numbers are rather sticky and the wood needs to be cleaned after use; and most importantly, measure the length of the nails used in the sawtooth picture hanger.  I couldn’t fix the last problem, and have been angry at myself for this simple mistake for quite awhile.  It’s time to move on.

Not that I won’t come back to it, but I think I need to mix it up a bit.

IATSE meets Stained Woods

January 31, 2010

My worlds are colliding.

I believe I’ve mentioned before that I’m a stagehand.  A sister in good standing in IATSE Local 618, Bloomington, IN.  That’s International Alliance for Theatrical Stage Employees.    One of my friends asked if it would be possible to get a Stained Woods version of our logo — or bug, as we call it.  It already looks like one of my star patterns, and thought I’d give it a try.  So, I spent an afternoon doing a quick mock-up, and trying a couple of new techniques.  Overall, I think it was a successful — even though a bit hurried, and therefore sloppier than I’d like — trial run.

Meme and stencils

July 11, 2009

I’m back to staining wood!

I can’t tell you how happy this makes me.  Yes, vacation is fun, too, but this is a different sort of therapy.  I’d like to finish the meme project, and have three of the five started.

I’m attempting a stencil of a 45 adapter.  I’m not sure how well it will work, but I have to try.  I traced an adapter onto a blank vinyl stencil page.  It’s plenty sticky, but I think the big problem will be how well I cut it out.

Well, any thoughts on how well this is working?  The center circle was not pretty, so I left it to do by hand.

As I removed the masking from this one I realized that I had a nice image on the reverse of the tape.

Tung oil down time

April 28, 2009

There’s not too much to report about the rolling ball sculpture base.  I’m working on finishing it with tung oil, which takes anywhere from four to twelve hours to dry.  It’s a bit like watching paint dry, only it takes longer.  Especially since I’ll probably end up with five or six coats on each side. To fill the time, I’ve researched tung oil on YouTube.  Yes, there are videos about tung oil.  And, this one is right up my alley.

Oh, and stencil practice.  Yes, I’m still trying to work out the ideal way for me to make stencils that work with wood and stain.  Here’s what I’ve been working on, and it looks like this idea has potential.  Now, I just need to practice my X-Acto work.

It’s all about the circles

April 13, 2009

It’s time for the circles.  I’ve had a love/hate relationship with them over the years.  No matter how hard I try, I can’t get the masking tape to form a circle. Doing them free hand just doesn’t leave the nice, crisp edge that I like.

I’ve tried many different ways to get them right.  The latest attempt was using a stencil film to cut out the circle, then with some Krylon Easy-Tack set it on the wood and stained away.  Circle fail!  Or, maybe it’s stencil fail.  As, you can see.

I know, I didn’t manage to cut the stencil film very well, but I still don’t think that would have helped the process.  Doese anyone have any ideas?  I’m going to try one more idea, but I don’t really think it will work.  So, does anyone out there have any inspiration to share? Please, let me know.
